Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely, Jr., who passed away in 2004, had a Naval career of several notable achievements including being the first African-American to command a combatant ship, to be promoted to flag rank, and to command a naval fleet.
This portrait of Admiral Gravely was officially unveiled at a reception in Wilmington NC on Nov. 19, 2010 the evening before the Commissioning Ceremony of the USS Gravely on Nov.20, 2010. It was painted to be hung on the U.S. Naval guided missile destroyer the USS Gravely, which was named in Admiral Gravely's honor.
